Connection Boost for VoIP in Asia

Today sees the opening of the long awaited High Speed Asia-America Gateway. The gateway is a high-bandwidth fibre-optic submarine cable system that connects Southeast Asia to the United States.

Internet users throughout Asia should start to see a dramatic increase in internet speed when connecting to services outside of the region.

The US550 million Asia-America Gateway (AAG) comes into operation today.

The cable has been planned since June 2006, when AiTi of Brunei Darussalam, CAT Telecom (Thailand), PLDT (Philippines), REACH (Hong Kong), StarHub (Singapore), Telekom Malaysia (Malaysia) and VNPT (Vietnam) all signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) for its construction.

In addition to being one of the longest undersea cable rollouts in history, the AAG will actually shorten the route for data from Asia to America, avoiding some of the wolds’ areas most prone to seismic activity in the process.

The AAG uses the latest Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technologies with a minimum design capacity of 1.28 terabit/s and a design capacity of 1.92 terabit/s. The last of the undersea cable work was completed in June and all 10 landing points were completed months ago.

The new cable will improve e-commerce traffic and help meet the increasing demand for faster and more reliable internet, VoIP, video and other multimedia services and applications.

Alternative SIP ports opened

We are pleased to announce new ports available for SIP registration to our servers.

An increasing number of users find themselves in environments where port 5060 (the default sip port) is blocked, either by the ISP, or network administrators. The opening of new ports enables sip registartion for these users.

The new ports are 2060 and 3060 in addition to the default 5060

Many softphones and hardware devices can be forced to use an alternative port by appending the port number to the registration url if the option to set the sip port does not exist. For example, sip1.mydivert.com:3060 will usualy force registration on port 3060

The configuration change has been achieved by running a second kamailio process which listens on the two new ports and then relays to 5060, where kamailio 1 handles the registration and state management.

Service Disruption Notification - Pakistan Numbers

All Pakistani DID numbers purchased at mydivert.com are currently out of service. This service outage is due to some internal issues in Pakistan and is beyond our control.

SIP Trunking for PBX

Mydivert.com today announces the introduction of a SIP Trunking service available to all users.

SIP trunking means that we can send SIP call invites in the form DID@IP:port instead of EXTENSION@IP:port. This is especialy useful for users with multiple DID in their account and using Asterisk or PBX systems to route calls. The SIP trunk invite will enable the pbx to easily determine from which DID number an incoming calls has originated.

The sip trunk can be enabled via a support request and we hope to add a 'toggle' feature to the user account area soon.

Notes on Voice Fraud

An example of Voice Phishing fraud was exposed today involving a mydivert.com user.

Voice Phishing, also known as Vishing is the criminal use of telephone communications, most often using features facilitated by Voice over IP (VoIP), to gain access to private personal and financial information. While scams such as Email Phishing have been around for some time, Voice Phishing exploits the public's trust in landline telephone services, which have traditionally terminated in physical locations which are known to the telephone company, and associated with a bill-payer.

It should be understood by anyone using mydivert.com that although the technology provides flexability, and fantastic communication opportunites, it should not be seen as an anonymous service. At any time, a law enforcement agency may contact us requesting the user information for a purchased phone number, and we are obliged to forward these details. This policy is intended to protect the interests of the general public, mydivert.com users, and the VoIP business model.

In a case such as that exposed today, a potential fraudster should understand that the complete call history, IP history, and all other user data is passed to law enforcement agencies.

Configuration for Asterisk behind NAT

Following the rollout of our new sip cluster, and the introduction of Kamailio extension state management, we would like to publish the new Asterisk configuartion required to work with mydivert.com

This configuration example assumes that your Asterisk server is on a private IP address behind NAT. If your Asterisk is behind NAT it must be setup to work behind NAT, i.e it should send it's private IP address in the contact field. This way the mydivert.com server knows that the respective peer is behind NAT and it can send back the packet properly.

To configure Asterisk with mydivert.com please make the following replacements in the sip.conf example given below:

SIPUSERNAME = Your SIP account username
SIPPASSWORD = Your SIP account password
LOCAL-IP = Your asterisk LOCAL IP address (example: 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0)
PUBLIC-IP = Your PUBLIC IP address (example: 200.43.215.194)

The configuration for Asterisk (sip.conf) should look like this :

[general]
disallow = all
allow = g729
allow = ulaw
allow = alaw
extenip = PUBLIC-IP
localnet = LOCAL-IP
context = default
nat = yes
domain = PUBLIC-IP

register => SIPUSERNAME:SIPPASSWORD@sip1.mydivert.com/SIPUSERNAME

[sip1.mydivert.com]
fromuser = SIPUSERNAME
username = SIPUSERNAME
authuser = SIPUSERNAME
insecure = very
dtmfmode = rfc2833
dtmf = rfc2833
disallow = all
allow = g729
allow = ulaw
allow = alaw
type = peer
host = sip1.mydivert.com
qualify = yes
nat = yes
context = default
canreinvite = yes
secret = SIPPASSWORD

All calls are now charged for the first 30 seconds and then every 30 second interval after that!

We are not aware of any other VoIP carrier offering 30 second intervals. The usual model is to charge for the first minute on connection, and then 60 second intervals after that. Our 30 second intervals offer the chance of great savings and fantastic value to our users.

More great news to follow in the coming days........

web server under pressure

Our website hosting server is currently experiencing a heavy load spike and may fail to respond. Our technical support engineers are currently investigating the cause.

The outage will not affect VoIP calls or our Asterisk servers, although users may experience problems logging into their accounts or viewing our website.

We hope the issue will be resolved very soon and appologise for any inconvienience caused.

Why use a DID number?

The advent of Direct Inward Dialing (DID) services for VoIP provides access to local telephone numbers in most countries around the world without the need for a physical presence in those countries. Calls to these DID virtual numbers are then forwarded by companies such as mydivert.com to PSTN or mobile networks, VoIP carriers, or SIP/IAX servers.

This means that:

1. International and long distance telephone calls are made with the caller only paying local call rates. For example, your family lives in Islamabad, Pakistan but you live in Dublin, Ireland. You would like your family to be able to phone you, but the long distance rates from Pakistan are very costly. If you purchase a Pakistani DID, anyone dialing that local number in Pakistan would connect to your phone in Dublin, but they would pay only local phone rates.

2. You are able to add telephone numbers to your phone line so that you are no longer restricted to one telephone number per line. This can be useful if a virtual telephone contact point is required in more than one country.

3. Conventional telephone calls may be terminated at non-PSTN devices such as VoIP. This has particular relevance for VoIP communications, as it allows people connected to the traditional PSTN network to call people connected to VoIP networks.

Besides these basic functions of DID numbers, there are many additional uses for local numbers. For example, consider the issue of privacy. If users advertise services on a website and they wish prospective buyers to contact them without publishing their own, private telephone number, a DID virtual number could be used.

Rapid Growth for VoIP Sector

"The VoIP service sector is predicted to be generating over €16 billion in global revenues by 2010".

That is the according to the financial advisory firm Grant Thornton, which believes that the growth is likely to continue over the next few years.

Customer numbers are likely to hit 250 million across the world within the next two years as the sector benefits from smaller telecoms providers merging together or being acquired by industry leaders.

Mr Joel Driver, Managing Director of Mydivert.com, confirmed the rapid growth figures and added that "total online sales at mydivert.com were currently increasing at over 15% per month".

"Despite ecomonic gloom all around us, the VoIP sector continues to expand at a breathtaking rate", Mr Driver said.

VoIP Internet Speed Test

The most significant factor that affects VoIP call quality is the speed of the internet connection used for making and receiving phone calls. The overall quality and reliability of your VOIP communications are completely reliant upon the quality, reliability and speed of the Internet connection that it uses.

The internet speed (or bandwidth) in both UP and DOWN directions is important. A minimum bandwidth of 256 kpbs is recomended for clear VoIP calls.

If your available upload and download speeds are above 128kbps and you don't have other applications or computers using up your bandwidth, your connection should support a single VoIP line.

Take the Mydivert.com Internet Speed Test for VoIP and test the connection speed between your PC and our server. For best results, don't use any other programs which access the Internet while the test is running.

What is Voice Phishing

Voice Phishing, also known as Vishing is the criminal use of telephone communications, most often using features facilitated by Voice over IP (VoIP), to gain access to private personal and financial information. While scams such as Email Phishing have been around for some time, Voice Phishing exploits the public's trust in landline telephone services, which have traditionally terminated in physical locations which are known to the telephone company, and associated with a bill-payer.

VoIP technology, when abused, can make features of caller ID spoofing and caller anonymity for criminal purposes available. Voice Phishing is typically used to steal credit card numbers or other information used in identity theft schemes from individuals.

The proliferation of Voice Phishing, or Vishing, is a threat to the general public and businesses in the VoIP telephony sector. In our opinion it should be the responsibility of VoIP carriers to know who is using their services. For this reason mydivert.com strive to demonstrate due dilligence in this regard. Anyone opening or using an account at mydivert.com may be requested to supply a scan of photo ID or otherwise verify their identity.

One reason that we choose to use the PayPal system to accept payments is that this seperates us from the users credit card information. Mydivert.com users can send personal identification documents to us knowing that these are not held together with their credit card information.

It should be understood by anyone using mydivert.com that although the technology provides flexability, and fantastic communication opportunites, it should not be seen as an anonymous service. At any time, a law enforcement agency may contact us requesting the user information for a purchased phone number, and we may be obliged to forward these details. This policy is intended to protect the interests of the general public, mydivert.com users, and the VoIP business model.

Setting up a Virtual Office

How to Set Up a Virtual Office and Local Geographical Presence

What is a Virtual Office?
Anyone who works from a remote location with a computer, telephone, email, or any other electronic means to perform their job and to communicate with their place of employment, is working in a virtual office. An employee may use a company telephone extension and email to communicate with customers and business associates, but they are not physically located in the company building. This ability to be away from ones company desk but continue to work in the usual manner gave rise to the terms 'telecommuting' and 'virtual office'.

The development of low cost telephone services and VoIP have extended this concept to include establishing a local telephone presence in countries around the world. This has become known as establishing a 'virtual presence'. With the trend towards globalisation the need for businesses to establish a telephone contact point in countries around the world has increased. Today businesses need to be easily contactable by telephone wherever their customers are located.

A virtual office now can be a telephone service that receives and routes telephone calls on behalf of a business - perhaps to another virtual office located in another country. The virtual presence is a means of receiving and passing on calls to a remote location while providing the customer with a local contact telephone number. The prime objective is to assure that customer contact is captured and followed up by whomever the call is relevant or important to. The business that has the virtual presence may not have fixed office premises or employ any staff in the same country as their customers.

In the past virtual telephone services were provided by a business center which would offer an answering and messaging service. Now, with Direct Inward Dialing (DID) telephone numbers which are peered to VoIP, any business can establish a local presence and open their own virtual offices around the world.

How to Set Up a Virtual Presence
In order to establish your virtual presence you will need a Direct Inward Dialing (DID) telephone number for the desired country. DID for VoIP use are still not available for every country, and all area codes, in the world although the coverage is increasing every day. DID numbers for most of the major business cities of the world are available, and an internet search will soon through up a list of providers.

The incoming telephone calls can either be forwarded to another number, messaging system, or VoIP telephone device. The PBX (private branch exchange) which routes the calls may be provided by a VoIP carrier, some other web based service, or could be software running on the end users own computer.

Things to Consider when Setting Up a Virtual Presence
DID and VoIP technologies work very well together when everything is configured correctly. As most DID/VoIP calls rely on more than one server or carrier working together, discrepancies in configurations can result in unstable communication. Common problems include, one way audio, loss of DTMF tones, echo distortion, and dropped calls. These problems generally arise from incompatible codec translations, or other restrictions affecting one or more of the services being used.

If you are planning to use a VoIP carrier it is important to check that an incoming call from your DID is going to be received. You may need to determine the originating IP address for your incoming DID calls and check that calls from this IP are accepted by your carrier. If you are using an Asterisk server, or some other pbx, you may need to add this IP address to the configuration (as an IP authenticated peer).

Check that your DID provider is supplying free, or very low cost, incoming call minutes. A DID with unlimited free incoming minutes, or at least 5000 minutes per month, would be considered reasonable in todays market. Do your research and check the per minute charges if you do exceed the monthly limit.

Check that your DID, VoIP carrier, and PBX are using compatible codecs.

The G711 codec is the most basic, and widely used, telecommunication audio codec. The G711 codec commonly ensures the most reliable transmission of DTMF tones (required for 'ring tones' and IVR answering systems), but does not use audio compression (causing distortion where internet bandwidth is restricted).

The G729 codec is also very widely used and produces excellent results for both DTMF and audio quality. However, with the G729 codec a licence is required by the PBX administrator if any transcoding is required.

It has been known for service providers to have an inadequate licence for the G729, restricted to a fixed number of simultaneous transcoded calls. In this circumstance users could experience loss of audio at times of high server usage. If all parties involved in the call route have G729 available then no transcoding is required and the calls will pass straight through.

The use of codecs will be negotiated between the servers involved in relaying your incoming call. The exact codec used will be determined by the codecs available on each server, and the preferred codec order list. Sometimes it may be necessary to experiment with calls to find the optimum configuration.

An Example Configuration & Quck Start Guide

Mr Bloggs is based in Colchester, a medium sized town in the United Kingdom. He runs a small, but growing, company that recruits specialist staff for the avaitaion industry.

While Mr Bloggs has been able to establish the company based on his previous years of experience in the aviation industry, the Colchester telephone number on his headed paper and website is now a restriction. Mr Bloggs feels that some of the bigger players in London don't bother to call his out-of-town telephone number, and the French contacts he met a last years trade show only call occasionaly for a few minutes.

Mr Bloggs decides the answer is to take his company international, opening virtual offices in both London and Paris. While he's at it he decides to open an American office in New York. This huge international expansion is estimated to require a capital investment of around 50 Euro (yes - 50 euro, or roughly $US 75).

As Mr Bloggs wants to answer his calls personaly when at his desk, he decides to use a hardware VoIP telephone. He had thought of using a softphone on his computer, but the loss of audio quality and connection delay persuaded him to invest in a simple hardware device. Mr Bloggs bought a Lynksys ATA telephone adaptor from ebay - it cost him 30 Euro and took 5 days to arrive. With this small adaptor plugged into his broadband modem, Mr Bloggs is able to use any old PSTN telephone to make and receive VoIP calls. There are many many VoIP telephones and adaptors. Mr Bloggs decides that the Lynksys ATA is simple to set up, cheap, and reliable, which is good enough for him.

In order to purchase his DID numbers Mr Bloggs checked out several providers, comparing their coverage, charges, and the number if incoming minutes available with each DID. He settles for the retail service at www.mydivert.com which meets his requirements. After opening an account Mr Bloggs is able to login to purchase his DID.

He purchases a London telephone number, and a New York number for €2.95 each. The French telephone number for Paris cannot be bought instantly because he has to email a scan of his photo-ID.

While this is a slight annoyance, Mr Bloggs appreciates that mydivert.com comply with the requirements of telecom regulators in each individual country, so sends a scan of his passport. He is okay with this because the Mydivert.com office do not retain a copy of his scanned photo ID. They submit it with the application for the virtual number and then delete it from their own records. The French number is allocated to his account within 4 hours.

The total account credit spent at mydivet.com is now €8.85.

Mr Bloggs follows the simple setup guide for his Lynksys adaptor, using the information he has for his sip account at mydivert.com, and is receiving calls on his London, Paris, and New York telephone numbers within minutes.

The bigger players in London see the new London telephone number at the top of Mr Bloggs website and don't hesitate to call when they are looking to recruit avaitaion staff.

The French contacts asked Mr Bloggs about his fancy Paris telephone number, and where the office was located. Mr Bloggs explained to them about the virtual presence, and how he was keen to open up the potential for his business in France. Impressed with his commitment and forward thinking approach, they and some of their contacts have started calling on a regular basis to discuss taking their businesses forward together. They even offered to provide some French language lessons - but even Mr Bloggs has his limit (for the time being!).

Mr Bloggs is off to a trade show in Florida next month and already has his business cards printed with his New York number.

International VOIP Calls

How To Make International VOIP Calls

Voice over Internet Protocol, sometimes referred to as Internet telephony is advancing everyday. It is now estimated that there are over 12 million VoIP users in the USA alone! This is because VoIP enables people to make international calls using their computers and broadband connections at a fraction of the cost compared to traditional PSTN telephone lines.

Making a VoIP call is very easy. All you need is a normal telephone and use it together with a VoIP adaptor (ATA). The person receiving the call cannot tell whether you are using a traditional PSTN, or a VoIP, telephone to make the VoIP call.

For you to get connected, you need to have a Broadband Internet connection. You do not necessarily need to have a computer. An ATA adapter connects the broadband modem directly to your normal phone enabling VoIP calls to be placed or received. You can then make VoIP calls to any number in the world.

Mydivert.com provides a service offering low cost VoIP international calls. All you need is an Internet connection to use our VoIP International service for outgoing calls. Another alternative to a hardware ATA device is to use a dialer, or softphone, on your PC together with a headset, or speakers and microphone.

VOIP calls can then be placed worlwide or at very low call rates.

If you purchase an incoming DID number to use with our service, you can than also receive your calls directly through your internet connection, or have the incoming calls forwarded to your landline or mobile phone.

For further information regarding our range of services please see our website, or contact sales[at]mydivert.com

What is a DID Number

What is a DID (Direct Inward Dialing) Number?

A DID number (sometimes referred to as a virtual number) is a local telephone number for any particular country or city. These numbers can then forwarded to a regular PSTN telephone, Voice over IP (VoIP), SIP, H.323, IAX, Skype, MSN or Google Talk anywhere in the world.

Typically a DID is used to provide local telephone numbers for customers worldwide, or to provide local access from regular telephones to non-PSTN destinations such as VoIP.

Tha advantages and uses of DID numbers include:

1. International and long distance telephone calls are made with the caller only paying local call rates. For example, your family lives in Moscow, Russia but you live in London, England. You would like your family to be able to phone you, but the long distance rates from Russia are very costly. If you purchase a Moscow DID, anyone dialing that local number in Moscow would connect to your phone in London, but they would pay only local phone rates.

2. You are able to add telephone numbers to your phone line so that you are no longer restricted to one telephone number per line. For example, you live in London, England but you have family in Moscow, London and Beijing. You if you purchase DIDs in Moscow, London and Beijing, then anyone dialing those local numbers would connect to your phone in London.

3. Conventional telephone calls may be terminated at non-PSTN devices if desired, such as VoIP and Skype. This has particular relevance for VoIP communications, as it allows people connected to the traditional PSTN network to call people connected to VoIP networks.

There are many additional uses for local DID numbers. For example, consider the issue of privacy. If users place classified advertisements in a newspaper and they wish prospective buyers to contact them without publishing their own, private telephone number, a temporary local number could be provided by the newspaper.

Calling Thailand from Ireland

How to call a Thai mobile from Ireland? - a question from a new mydivert.com user this morning.

Mydivert.com specialise in long distance international call routes. Our call rates to Thai mobiles and landlines are an amazing 1.2 euro cent per min!

There are many ways to use VoIP to either make calls to Thailand, or receive your calls from abroad on your Thai mobile.

1) Call Forwarding
With a virtual VoIP number your callers pay Local Call Rates when they call you. You pay a very low call forwarding charge (1.2 cent/min to Thailand) which is deducted from your mydivert.com account credit. For example, if you have a Dublin virtual phone number with the calls forwarded to Thailand, you can call the Dublin number from anywhere in Ireland and the calls will ring to the Thai mobile. You can update the ring-to number anytime by logging into your mydivert.com account - so the Dublin number can be used to call many destinations.

2) Use a Hardware SIP Phone or Adaptor
Using a SIP phone or ATA adaptor will allow you to make calls using mydivert.com just like using a normal pstn telephone. Each time you place a call you will only be charged the per minute rate to that destination. If you pick up the phone and call Thailand the call will cost you 1.2 cent per min (less than 1 Thai Baht! - cheaper than placing the call from Thailand). An incoming phone number is not even required to make these calls.

An analogue terminal adaptor (ATA) is a piece of equipment which allows you to use a normal telephone with a VoIP service such as mydivert.com. The device acts as a bridge between your existing phone and your broadband router/modem. This allows you to make calls as you would on a normal phone line, using a standard telephone plugged into a small adaptor. Lynksys ATA are available very cheaply on ebay.

3) How to Call from an Irish Mobile???
If your mobile phone supports Fring or Gizmo VoIP applications, and you have wireless access to the internet, you can use your mobile phone to call directly over your mydivert.com SIP account.

For the advanced user even greater savings can be made when placing calls from an Irish mobile to Thailand. A peice of equipment called a GSM/VoIP gateway is required. By using a pay-as-you-go sim card in the gateway and taking advantage of free network-tonetwork calls, or phone-a-friend-for-free type packages, it is possible to call Thailand from an Irish mobile network for 1.2 cent/min

Regulations and Requirements for buying Virtual Numbers

Following on from my post regarding the Pakistani (PTA) requirements for purchasing DID numbers we received quite a few requests for clarification overnight.

The sittuation remains fluid for many countries around the world where VoIP DID are available. As more and more Telcos enable virtual DID numbers, and more vendors open on the market with different documenation requirements, the sittuation changes almost daily.

Certainly in order to purchase the most reliable DID from the most reputable vendors it is strongly advised to offer documents/ID etc. where possible. Where this is not possible DID may be still be available but not always from the best vendor.

Below is a summary of the current sittuation.

Firstly you will need to create an account with MyDivert.com, with €10 account credit. Simply fill in your account information on the new user page and continue to the checkout.

A valid email address is required for you to receive your account information.

Before your account can be activated you may be asked to supply additional information to verify the authorisation of your paypal payment.

Once your account is open, you can login and purchase your incoming local phone number.

Documentation Requirements for Purchasing DID Phone Numbers
While most of the Countries on our list allow the automatic purchase of national DID numbers, the following requirements may apply when purchasing numbers from the countries listed below.

Please contact our support team for further information.

Tighter Regulation of Pakistani Voip DID

Tighter documentation and identification requirements must now be met for individuals or business to purchase VoIP numbers from Pakistan.

The new requirements state:

The end user must supply a scan of the front and back of their Pakistani NIC card. The NIC card must be from the same area (or area code) as the DID number applied for. Overseas NIC cards will not be accepted.

The end user must also supply a local address with the application.

It is hoped that the tighter regulation will encourage more telcos to make DID available for VoIP use. This in turn will increase the coverage area and reduce monthly charges.

As of this moment only Islamabad (9251) numbers are available at realistic prices.

Islamabad virtual numbers are available for 5.99 euro per month from http://www.mydivert.com
